A research conducted by engineers at MIT proved this. Nanoparticles were introduced into the plant which gave t a non-native function to detect chemicals known as nitroaromatics which are often used in explosives.
When the plant detects any of these chemicals, the carbon nano tubes embedded in the plant emit a fluorescent signal that can be read by an infra-red camera which can be attached to a small computer that sends an email to the subject once it receives the signal. Michael Strano, the leader of the research team says that this is a perfect demonstration of how we have overcome human/plant communication.
Come to think of it, if plants can be used to detect presence of explosives, don't you think this technology may just save many lives from explosive attacks?
Technology is changing the world so fast than you know. There are millions of discoveries yet to be discovered in plants. The relationship between biology, biochemistry, engineering and other fields will enable new discoveries every other time than will see our world becoming better than yesterday.
